When we think of marriage in Georgian high society and the regency era of Jane Austen we often think of love and romance. But marriage for the gentry and aristocracy was a serious business. For a woman marriage was the most important consideration of her life, a move that could bring security and status. But a good marriage could be hard to come by and disgrace or despair was never very far away. This talk explores the playgrounds of the wealthy – the marriage markets of their day – and uncovers some of the scandal and sadness in the lives of those involved.
