SUCCESS FOR CHARITY FAMILY FUN DAY IN HEATON MOOR
A charity family fun day held on Saturday 12th June in Heaton Moor raised over £1,500 for three leading North West cancer charities.
Rachel’s Wish Lanterns which is linked to The Christie, MacMillan Cancer Support and St Ann’s Hospice will all benefit from the money raised when local businesses and residents came together for the day.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Chris Murphy opened the fun day at 12pm and stayed to help wash cars and enjoy the atmosphere.
A mini fairground, stalls selling food and drink, and a face painter which helped transform the kids in to their favourite characters, gave crowds plenty to keep them occupied. Support from local DJs Tony and Helen ensured traders and visitors alike were kept entertained.
Rekel Kerr, who had been growing his dreadlocks for 10 years, set up a website to allow people to vote for him to CUT or KEEP his locks.
Thanks to a last minute donation of £100, he managed to save his hair from the chop – but joined in the spirit of the day and let a barber cut some of the locks, with the crowd cheering him on, as a thank you to all his supporters.
Organiser and director at Easy Access Self Storage, Sue Bailey, says: “This is our first family fun day and we’re now hoping to make it an annual event.
We’ve not finished raising money; local businesses donated some amazing prizes including family passes for Camelot, a weekend in Blackpool and a night out in Manchester city centre, so we’re raffling these off.

The day was organised by Sue Bailey and Sarah Kerrigan to raise money for Rachel’s Wish Lanterns, a charity affiliated to The Christie.
The charity sells wish lanterns and the goal is to raise £15,000 for a ‘Gold Leaf’ in memory of Rachel, Sarah’s sister, who died last year.
The raffle will be drawn on 29th July 2010, a day which marks the first anniversary of Rachel’s passing.
