The next meeting is on Tuesday 9th April and the speaker will be Professor Nigel Linge wiyh a talk entitled The Red Box.
Nigel Linge is Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Salford. He is an electronic engineer by profession, who specialises in data communication networks and their application. In 2013, he was chosen as the presenter of the Institute of Telecommunication Professionals’ family Christmas presentations. He delivered a lecture entitled Your world in your hand at 5 venues around the UK.
The British phone box has been part of our landscape since 1921 when the first K1 model was introduced. However, it was the K2 design by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and then his much more numerous K6 design that established the familiar and iconic red box on our streets. Today, the mobile phone generation have probably never even stepped inside a phone box, let alone used one. Nevertheless, the phone boxes remain as an essential part of what makes Britain, Britain! The talk looks at the history and evolution of the British phone box.
